Ben, Most types of sailboat hardware (blocks, cam cleats, traveler cars, larger winches) now come with either ball or roller bearings to minimize friction. Why don't smaller winches use ball or roller bearings? I would love to have them on my Lewmar #7 winches, but they are not offered. I don't need a larger winch on my boat, but less friction in the winches would be a very welcome feature, especially when I am flying my 160 genoa. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Roller Bearings

Ed, The size 8 winches have a roller bearing on the shaft where the 7's do not. I am checking with the winch factory to see if there are any options for you, and will let you know what happens..

Roller Bearings

Well Ed, I thought that maybe since the drums on the 7&8 are the same size we might have an easy fix, but such is not the case. The the Stem Dia on L7 is 47.95/48.05 [LARGER], while L8 is 44.93/44.98 [SMALLER], so unfortunately you cannot put a Roller Bearing onto a L7 Centre Stem. It has to be wider to give it more strength. I know where you could get a deal on a pair of 8's. www.lewmar.com

#7's and #8's

Ben, Is the #8's mounting hole pattern the same size as the #7's? I would like to avoid drilling any new holes if that is possible. Thanks, Ed
