Tried connecting the GPS to DSC today and speant well over an hour trying to fish a wire down through the tube of the Lewmar pedestal. Tried pushing a wire, an electrians fish tape, and splicing and pulling a redundant wire. All got stuck within inches of the base.

Am I missing something???? :doh: This has been a real PITA and geting to the point of not worth the effort.

The secret to fishing wires is how the wire is attached to the fish tape or string, you have to have a tight nose on it so it won't get stuck and sometimes if it won't go one way try the opposite, I'll cut the nose off the snake and just tape the the wire tightly along side and try no to pull too hard and have it slide off...I'm not familiar with a Lemar pedestal but have fish a ton of wire up pedestal guards and out a small hole at the top

Hopefully this will help. I haven't seen in any discussions of wiring any mention of a very handy tool. Rather than use a metal fish tape, I usually use a fiberglass rod fish tool. Sections thread together if you need more length, they are flexible up to a point, and come in very handy if you need to push rather than pull.

Mine is made by Greenlee, available at Home Depot. It's been a lifesaver more than once...

The SS tube on the Lewmar pedestal is very easy to take off. They were held by just a few set screws. May need some penetrating oil but removable. I had to make it taller by sleeving thus the removal. Since I got it down on the bench, fishing wire thru is a breeze. Once you got a pilot line, everything else is easy.

Home Depot also sells wire pulling gel if you got too many wires and gets too tight.

Yes it is a real pain fishing down the tube especially when I had so many wires in my tube radar and seems all the instruments are there too and I really thought inpossible in my situation.
Any way I needed to run a wire for my sirius weather and so I first push the metal type down with a lube type grease like vaseline to help and than pulled up from under is what worked for me,I also did take the tube apart to help.

My chart plotter was a factory install. I went to make the connection shortly after delivery and found a nema connection in the 12v electrical compartment. I complained to Angus that it should have been hooked up and they installed an interface between the nema connection and the radio. If yours has the nema connection it may be the easier way to go. I had to search inside the electrical box to find it and I think it was screwed to the dividing panel between the 12v and 120v boxes.

If you need more info I can look at the install next time I am at the boat.

In my ped there was a bunch of the extra wire folded up and stuffed into the pipe. You might try to pull each wire back and forth to make sure it is a straight piece, not bundled and blocking the pipe. When you do pull in the cable, pull another string for a messenger for the next time.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll try to see if taking the pedestal apart will help and check for bunched up wires. Must be something blocking the tube as my hard fish tape stops dead.

Ron, good idea about the bunched up witres I'll check for that too and I thought about the messenger line while cursing that they hadn't left one before.


Jake, I wish they had run them to the elctrical panel, but I found the 2 NMEA brown and yellow, + and - in the instrument pod.

I checked last night and have to correct my statement. The connection that I found was a Sea Talk connection and the interface box RS 232 transfers the Sea Talk to NMEA 0183 for the DSC radio. Sorry for the error.

On the Hunter 356, and I don't know the pedestle manufacturer, where do the wires enter the tubes. I have looked in the access ports in the aft berth on each side and see the pedestle bolts but no wires. There are two wires which seem to come from somewhere else (Other than the pedestle) but they are of far lower gage than I would expect for NMEA data conductors.
Any help?

the wires run down the tubes under the platform that makes up the aft cockpit deck. On the port side, the bundle runs parallel to the edge of thedeck panel and enters the aft locker just outboard of the fuel shutoff. From there, the loop outboard and forward through the tube in the large lazarette

Cheap quick fish

I use small diameter acetylene welding rods. Really cheap and stiff, but bend them as needed. Tape the wire to it.
