I have two self tailing lewmar 16's on my 27. The boat was built in 1983 and I assume the lewmars are of the same date. On standard lewmar winches there is a clip that comes off then the unit is easy to disassemble. On the ST'ing I don't see a clip. Does the staionary part of the winch come off or do you have to pull the unit off the boat. Newer Lewmars have have a cap that comes off but I don't see one on these. There is nothing around the hex drive that looks removable. Has any member been through the same type of unit. Mine are in dire need of TLC. Lee Henderson S/V El Sueno

How they come apart

To take the older self tailing Lewmar 16's apart, grab the self tailer that reaches over the top and rotate it counter clockwise. Once that is off, the drum will lift off.

Older Lewmar ST's

In addition to what Chuck wrote I'll add that mine were very tight. I had to lash a long pole to the Winch head to get enough leverage. Really thought I would twist the thing right off the boat. Try this site for schematics and parts.
