Hey sail fans! My 87 O'Day 322 has a leak in the Bow hatch over the v-bearth.(do all boats leak?)My wife accused me of wetting the bed until I was able to show her the drip coming from overhead. The Lewmar hatch is seated well to the deck, however there seems to be a weak seal in one small area were the glass is seated in the frame of the hatch. The easy fix would be to caulk around the outside edge of the glass and frame. Hopefully no one out there is going to suggest that I remove the glass from the hatch frame and reseat the glass. (sounds like a lot of work) Please talk me into using the caulk Smooth sailing

double work

KEN,you seam determined to use the caulk and you could do a quick fix that way that may even last a while but sooner or later you will have to do it correctly or replace the hatch. You might as well do it once and be done with it. The hatch needs to be resealed ! If you really are determined to use some sort of caulk try it inject it into the seal with a syringe maybe it will seal enough to stop your leak

Select Plastics

If the hatch type you have is not the DIY type replacement then Select Plasics is a name I got from Lemar for doing this. I contacted them and they seemed like they would be good to work with. The have the whole works including the baking ovens required to complete a like new repair and lens replacement. Chect the link below and that will put you in touch with them. Good Winds Dave

autoglass caulk

This month's edition of Good Old Boat magazine has an article about dealing with leaky lewmar hatches. The article suggests Permatiex silicone windshield glass sealer and a palette knife. I suggest picking up this excellent magazine (I'm reading my sample copy from cover to cover) I think this article was written with you in mind! good luck

Lewmar hatch leaks

I had a leak on one of my lewmar hatches(on an H310) and was determined to find the source before I started replacing gaskets, etc. I originally assumed that it was from the main gasket sealing the glass to the frame, but when I had my wife hold a hose on top of it while I was investigating below, it turned out that it was coming in from the hole in the glass where the handle passes through!!!!! I removed the handle, and found that a thin foam gasket was not seated properly so I corrected that and applied a small amount of clear silicone in the hole and guess what? It's FIXED. So don't make any assumptions until you put the hose to it.
