Paws & Chill is a 1999 Hunter 420 with center cockpit.
The hatch over the aft cabin is a Lewmar Coastline size 70.

I got new seal material from Hatchmasters.com and would like to replace it. That would be easier if I could remove the hatch cover and take it down below to work on it. After this I will be rebedding the frame as well, and that would certainly be easier without the hatch attached.
But I can’t see how to free the hinge. Perhaps I can tap it in from the end, but the hinge pin doesn’t seem to be one long rod. Tapping in one end doesn’t seem to move the opposite end.

The hinge is certainly different from the smaller hatch I’ve done previously.

There are three parts to the hinge, no holes to push the rod aside.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks.

Welcome aboard @barryhf .

I removed the hinge pin from my smaller hatch a few years back and firstly, I offer you my condolences with this little bugger.

The hinge pin in mine (and probably yours) was in fact one continuous piece of rubber rod. It does not want to come out without a lot of gentle persuasion and then swearing when the former fails. The one trick I did have success with was to gently and evenly heat the length of the hinge with a hair drier (not a heat gun). Drive a drill bit of the same diameter in the end of the hinge. If not one end, try the other end. A long, slow, gentle, process until you can grab the other end and start pulling.

I cheated when I put the pin back in and applied a very light film of synthetic grease on the rubber hinge pin. Ask me in another five years if this was such a good idea. DO NOT use petroleum grease or it's pretty much in there for life. Something synthetic like Super Lube grease.

Quick question, are those the Mk2 style lewmar hatches?
