I purchased a 93 Hunter 33.5 for the 2011 season. One of my projects this spring is to clean and re-grease the winches. I have 2 Lewmar 40 2 speed winches. They are mounted in a recessed area on the coaming. I had no problem with dis-assembling the winches until the last step of removing the gears. There is not enough clearance to remove largest gear from the base of the winch. It appears that I will have to remove the base of the winch from the coaming inorder to remove the gears for cleaning - this will add hours to my project as I will have to reinstall and seal the base. Am I missing something?
