Lewmar 40 ST disassembly

I am trying to disassemble my winches and can not figure out how to remove the 2 gears at the bottom. I see they are nested together but there is not enough vertical space to separate for removal.

I'm sure I'm missing something simple but I'm stumped so reaching out for advice

Should have googled a bit more before I posted. It looks like my pre 1984 winches require removal to get these gears out. Bummer, I guess I'll try to clean in place.
