Also is there a difference between the chrome and aluminimum besides weight?

Say I took a look at your "EHow" link on winches just out of curiosity.
I don't think the guy who wrote that 1 pager knows much about winches since he harvested that info from another winch website. The biggest error though was stating that winches cost from "$35.00 - $75.00" WTF??? I wish. Does he mean the price of a winch HANDLE? lol. Try adding a zero & then another thousand onto that severely underrated price. I want to replace my original 2 speed Lewmar's as the chrome is just about gone on 'em from their may years of faithful service. I just can't touch the price of new Self Tailers. Maybe I could afford to rechrome them. After I finsih paying for my wife & kids braces. lol.

Finding used self tailers will be next to impossible. Finding non self tailers is more likely. Try Ebay or Craigs List.

Defenders was where I got 3 winches for about 50% off as a discontinued item. couldnt pass it up. somewhere I saw a refirb kit that replaced the center cap with a self tailer mechinism. cheaper than replacing the whole thing. Must say for ease of sailing upgrading to self tailing locking winches was well worth it in my book.

I don't know why Lewmar doesn't sell a new self tailing kit for the standard chromed two speed Lewmar 30 winches, of which they have sold millions of in the last 30 years.
Probably because they want you to buy their all new self tailing winches instead. I seem to remember a blue ring type self tailing add on that they used to sell in the 80's era.
I also used to think my Britsh compatriots were as frugal & penny pinching as I am, but I guess Lewmar is just about making money, like everyone else is these days. No one even wants to service or upgrade the old stuff anymore. I've thought about getting my old winches re-chromed, but then I decided to just wait till I get the money for new self tailers, or maybe just buy a newer boat one day!
