Prior to servicing the winches on my 1984 H34 I discovered that Lewmar no longer makes parts for their older 16st. I'm confident servicing these winches (the dis-assembly and rebuild) but feel that there is a high probability that I will find parts needing replacement. The winches are quite sluggish and appear to have not been lubed in years. Any suggestions on how best to proceed short of laying out $1200. for new upgrades? Any vintage Lewmar 16st winches out there that are in mint condition?

What "parts" do you need specifically. IIRC, the pawls and springs, which is what usually need to be replaced, haven't changed and any Lewmar rebuild kit will have them. The rest of the material simply needs to be cleaned.

Not too bad

The pictures show a completely dis assembled ST 16 and the pawls and springs for the same.

Rebuild kits, part number 19700100 are readily available from multiple sources for about $45 and in the bay area I can get individual pawls and springs from at least two different chandleries. The individual parts would save money, you probably won't need pawls but I would replace the springs just because.

There was an extensive discussion about grease and lubing in general recently and I suggest you look that up.

As long as you don't drop anything overboard this is an easy and rewarding project, good luck.
