Does anyone have documentation for breakdown and maintenance on the Lewmar 16 winches that came on the Series 2? Mine have had very little use so I hate to replace them. I'm sure a good cleaning will do the trick.Thanks,Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Hi Ric

Standard winches were the Lewmar 8. The Lewmar 16
is easy to take apart and service. Might need new pawl springs but that should
be it.

Cheers

Ric,Check out C&C Resource Center C&C Resource Center The most comprehensive site for owners of C&C Yachts. Reviews, Owners Comments, Photos, Maintenance and Do-it-yourself projects. View on www.cncphotoalbum... Preview by Yahoo for a comprehensive list of winch diagrams. The actual url is cncphotoalbum.com/indexes/winches.htm with www on the front. Darned Yahoo keeps hijacking my cut-and-paste!Mostly they just need a good cleaning and re-greasing. I usually put new pawl springs in and a new clip on the top also.Peter.

Had one fly apart once when the clip at the top fell out. Fortunately all the pieces landed in the cockpit!Peter

Thanks Peter. I actually already found an exploded diagram of the parts, but nothing to tell me how to take it apart. How do I remove the Circlip from the top so I can pull it apart? Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Bill from the group sent me an email mentioning that This Old Boat has a section in it on winches. I forgot that I had both editions of the book and read both from cover to cover a couple of years back. After a quick review, I was able to remove the Circlips. Now I can start another project. Thanks for everyone's input.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

The circlip is a spiral-wound piece of flat spring steel. Look closely and you'll see the end of the spiral. Use a very small flat screwdriver or knife blade to gently pry it away from the center and up until you can unwind it from the groove. Be careful not to bend or stretch it, which is why one of mine came off when I almost lost the drum!Picture at http://www3.telus.net/sailing/circlip.jpg http://www3.telus.net/sailing/circlip.jpg View on www3.telus.net Preview by Yahoo

There wasn't a listing of my winch on the Lewmar website. I sent an email to Lewmar and they responded this morning by sending me the right page that includes the exploded diagram of the winch (which actually matches my winch) along with full service details. Surprisingly, they still make the pawls & springs kit for the winch. West Marine carries the kit and I ordered it this morning and will have it tomorrow. The only issue is that I have to take the winch base off to get to the bottom gear and pawls. Guess I need to find a midget or small child to stuff in the cockpit lockers. It beats buying new winches though. Mine are in great shape except for the springs.Let me know if anyone else here has the 2 speed Lewmar 16 Standard Winch (made in the 70's) and I can post the doc to the files section.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Thanks Peter. I figured that out yesterday and was able to take the winches apart. This morning, Lewmar confirmed what I thought, that I have to take the winches completely off to change out the pawls and springs for the bottom gears.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net
