I have Lewmar 16 self tailing 2 speed winches for my halyards on my Hunter 34. They are probably pre 1985, which means you cannot disassemble them from the top. I have removed them from the cabin top and been successful in removing 3 pieces from the bottom, but now I am stuck. There is no ring that I can see, or anything else that will allow me to go further. The Lewmar Web site does not have manuals for this era of winch. There must be a few of you out there that have figured this out. Anyone? Anyone?

maybe some help

I do have the manual for Lewmar winches: According to it: 1. The top comes off by banging the self tail tang in a counterclockwise direction with a block of wood and a hammer. This enables you to unscrew the top cap 2.Then the drum can be lifted off exposing the bearing collars and the gears 3. The top collar lifts off exposing the "key" which is a little "chunk" that fits into the side of the spindle. This lets you slide the spindle out ( from the top) 4. rest is pretty stright forward- reassemble in reverse order. Suspect the removal of the top by banging St tang and the finding of the key were giving you problems? I had to look carefully for the key as it is hard to see if the sleeve under the collars is covered with grease.
