letting down the Sail

I was recently out in the bay and needed my sail to come down pretty quick to avoid being beached. The sail got stuck and so I ended up on dry ground. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep those little things that attach the sail to the mast from getting lodged and stuck...aight, thanx Droo
