Hello Sailboat Forum,

I’m having difficulty finding a specific part number for my Universal Diesel M20. Usually it pulls right up in my parts manual here:

Take a look at the attached video. There is a tiny water leak coming from the impeller housing. Specifically from the metal cap (silver color not brass).

First one to find the part number wins! Thanks so much

Jim

That looks like a grease cup for the sleeve bearing. Try unscrewing the cap and filling the inside of the cap with grease then screwing it back on but only until you feel the grease going in.. The cup may have been added by a previous owner to slow the bearing wear. Typically, you’d tighten it a quarter turn or so before cranking up; that would last 5-10 hours then tighten another quarter turn until it bottoms out.. then unscrew and refill with grease.

Here is the part number:
DAYTON, Mfr Part # PP54G, Dayton, Grease Cup - 23AZ92|PP54G - Grainger
I rebuilt a pump like that for a friend several years ago. It was on a Westerbeke and had eaten its bearing. When we replaced bearing and shaft, I added the grease cup; The bearing lasted many years after that..
When you remove the cap, fill the reservoir with grease, and snug the cap down, It should no longer leak.

True. Unless it does. Then there is a need for a rebuild.
It was difficult to see if the leak was coming just from the Grease Cup or if there was something more nefarious. I like the grease cup approach because it is the simplest to address and might resolve the problem.
