I would like to hear from other Hunter 22 owners concerning the length of the shaft on their outboard motors. Short, long, or X-long.??? My boat is equipped with an outboard bracket which can raise and lower the motor. My old Evinrude Yacht Twin - X-long - has developed some problems and I may need to replace her. Your thoughts please.

Thanx in advance

I have the 85 hunter 22 and we have a normal length shaft with the bracket the brings the motor out of the water. Forgive me I don't know the name of it. I love being able to get the motor all the way out. Less drag when sailing.

My question deals with the length of the shaft. It is not a question of getting the motor out of the water, but how deep is the prop when it is in the water. There are three shaft lengths. Short, long, and X-long as I explained in my post. I have no idea what you mean by "normal."

I had a long-shaft Honda (not XL) on our Hunter 22 years ago and it worked well. We were on an inland lake however and didn't have to deal with any serious waves. Let that be your decising factor.

short shaft is 15 inches, standard is 20 inches and long shaft is 25 inches. Normal is generally the 20 inch. I would not use a short shaft on any trailerable unless it is the smaller engines on small daysailors depending on the transom height of the outboard motor bracket. I hope this helps your understanding.

Thanx Dave

Mine is the long or X-long. I was asking because I was afraid I was going to have to replace the engine. I am now having it repaired and am planning to put it back on the boat. It is an Evinrude Yacht Twin and measures about 27".

You will be fine but be cautious when placing on or off the trailer and if you run aground, back up vs. going forward.

Ok here's a couple of pics from our boat on the water, I did hit some 3+ foot waves in the channel going out into the gulf this weekend, where my prop did come out of the water but it was only a couple of times and wasn't the biggest issue... My first mate (wifey for Lifey) was way concerned about other issues than the prop coming out of the water. :)

You are fine. I can only guess what other concerns there are in choppy seas but at least you are alive to let us know vs. in the coffin.

The Yacht Twin is a great motor! I wish I could find a 25", 4 hp for an emergency back up motor as the 2 cylinder is smooth and it is light. Chief

Have had good performance from our engine. That is until now when the shop could not get it apart because the water tube is fused in place due to salt water. We cannot find a tube of the right length to replace the old one. Probably going to shorten the length of the shaft by five inches. Hopefully this will not affect performance.

Gary,
I have a Tohatsu 6HP long shaft (25") on my 1981 H22 and use a Garelick model 71042 engine mount, but the shaft length alone should not be considered in isolation.

1. How far up the waterline is your engine mount (as Dave stated),
2. What sea conditions (wave height) do you (or anticipate to) sail, AND
3. What is the vertical travel of your engine mount ??

These three factors impact what you would or would not want for an engine shaft length.

Typically, keeping the engine's propeller immersed to the cavitation plate (water level) is what's needed for 'calm seas'; additional immersion would be needed for 'rougher' seas for more efficient engine (propeller) operation.
