I am trying to replace the rudder bearing on my Legend 41 (2004 model) but it is not proving to be simple! The boat was made by Luhrs in the USA but now resides in the UK.
The issue I have is that there is a slip ring fitted at the top of the (lower) rudder bearing in order to prevent the rudder lifting, the slip ring is a roller arrangement. If the rudder bearing was just to be knocked/cut out then there is a risk that this could damage the slip ring. Whilst I can get a new bearing machined I dont know whether these slip rings are readily available and if so from where and I dont want to remove the bearing without being able to replace the slip ring, if required.
I have spoken with Eddie Breeden at Marlow Hunter and he put me in touch with the two companies who supplied Luhrs rudder bearings; Tides Marine and South Coast Marine parts. I have spoken with Tides Marine and they have confirmed it is not one of their bearings (as they supply bearings with lip seals). South Coast Marine parts in Clearwater, Florida do not seem to be in business any more.
Any guidance will be much appreciated?
