I am contemplating buying a "92 Legend 43 and want to know what people think of this boat. Is it well made? Rugged? blue water capable? what should I look for as to dangers and wear damage. What are its strong features? how does it compare to a catalina 42 or a Beneteau? Please respond as soon as possible as purchase negotiations are imminent.

On the surface, it looks like a great boat

A friend of mine wanted to buy a boat last year. We were debating between a Hunter legend 43 and other models. Our first concern was: would he be comfortable owning a hunter. Would he be proud to tell others he owns a hunter. At that time, I was still a hunter basher. We examined that statistics on the boat and found them to be as good as the next boat. His boat has 3 cabins and is ideal for his family size. Since he bought the boat, we sailed with them on several occassions. Never in the same boat. At Anchor, the hunter was very stable, not wandering around alot and not rocking as much as our 36 foot boat. The quality of the boat looks good. Make sure you get a good survey. He is very happy with his purchase and its sailing attributes. It does not sale like a J, and a J is not as comfortable at anchor. If a cruising cottage is what your after, the boat should be great. His boat got me thinking about changing to a Hunter. we have now done so. Good luck.

We love our bluewater-modified Legend 43

Since 1991 we have put some 30,000 NM on our Hunter Legend 43 (hull # 1), much of it longer passages (2x Mexico, 2x Hawaii, 1x Australia). Now we are getting ready for a 2000 NM upwind passage to Fiji, followed by 2,500 NM of inter-island crossings between Fiji and the remote Tuvaluan archipelago. Alas, I don't have enough time left this weekend to give you a detailed account of the improvements we made to get "Rivendel II" bluewater-ready. However, an overview can be found at <http://www.seacrest.nl/frame.html> (last story) and by searching the HOW site here, as well as the rec.boats.cruising newsgroup using "Rivendel II" or "Flying Dutchman" as search terms (e.g. with the Power Search option at dejanews.com). Hope to see yah out there someday! Henk "Flying Dutchman" Meuzelaar
