Hi Team,

I am looking to replace the forward heads hatch. Does anyone know what the cutout size of the hatch is as can't find in the manual.

All I can see is Hatch Size 10

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!!

Replacing old hatches AND removing the hatch, measuring the cut out is one the many enjoyable things about boat ownership and satisfaction you get from a job well done.

Last year I did just that for 4 portlights on a 1984 boat. Provided the dimensions to the custom fabricator who prepared a CADD, which I approved and then they fabricated them, then installed the new ones. Very satisfying.

You can remove the hatch and repair it yourself with nre lens and gasket OR you can also send it to Hatchmasters to rebuild it or local hatch repair shop. Let the forum know how the project is progressing.

The plastic on my hatches was cracked & glazed on my Hunter 88 - 28.5. What I did was to remove both of my hatches and remove the plexiglass and replace the using new plexiglass (smoked color, as before). They both turned out very well.

I did make a make a mistake on ordering the new plexiglass in that for the smaller hatch (above the table, about 11x11) I ordered 1/4” and the forward hatch (22x22) I ordered 1/2”. Both shounder have been 3/8”. The smaller hatch I raised up in the frame & sealed with 3M 4200 so that it was level with the top of the frame, and the larger hatch I rounded off the top edge and smoothed the edges out with a torch, and they will both be just fine. When putting them together I used some small nuts as spacers and and put masking tape around rhe perimeter for a cle line when removed, and sealed them. I’m quite pleased with both.

The side window covereds (~48 x 7) were cut out from 1/4” plexiglass (again smoothed the edges with a torch) using the originals as a pattern and will re-attached with 3M 4200 as well.

Thanks for your input.

main issue is that I am based in the UK so it is difficult to make use of a lot of the resources stateside. Therefore if I can get the cut out dimensions of the forward hatch (the actual size of hole through the deck I can find an alternative hatch to fit.

Question: Is the frame of your hatch damaged or unusable that you are replacing it, or is the plexiglass crazed (Cracked) that just the glass inserts could be replaced?

in my case, the plexiglass was going bad and I was able to remove it from the frame (frame removed from the boat) and I used that piece as a pattern to cut out the replacement pieces that I ordered from Tap Plastics.

Have you tried to take any measurements from the hatch?

Sir Michael

Hello.

Basically the P Hinges have snapped. Replacements are expensive and take 8 to 12 weeks to get top the UK. I also need to replace the handle. By the time I have paid out and waited for arrival I may as well buy a new one from a UK supplier. In order to do so I have tried to find the drawings from Bomar but none cound.

I could take the hatch off and measure but hoping to find the cutout size so I can simply source and replace

Then your best bet is to remove it.

I did some quick checks: how to remove hatch
and it doesn't look to be too difficult. You might be able to remove it and do your measurements, then put it back down (temporarily) until you are able to locate a suitable replacement. I would hope that you could find one in a boat salvage yard, or possibly on ebay or something similar, once you get the dimensions that you need. Looks like it's probably a Bomar hatch. You might be able to find a match with just the outside dimensions.

Best of luck to you.

Sir Michael
