Hello again,
The lids have some cracks around the hinges. I just removed one and it looks like the aluminum bedded at lid edge swelled and cracked the fiberglass around it (see picture). Not sure how much of aluminum is there and wonder if anyone had this happened and what was done about it.
Thanks and stay safe.

Depending on where located, it’s more likely freeze damage from water getting into the hinge screws but same fix applies regardless of cause - ground out the glass and re-glass and fair the repair. Aluminum should be uneffected.

Ah yes. I had the same issue. I wish I could remember exactly what I did to repair it. But I can't remember all of the details and I don't have detailed pictures.
I do remember that the problem was on both covers. And I replaced the hinges because they did not open and close easily. I think the hinges were the original problem in that they became stiff and then exerted a lot of force on the hinge mounting.
In any event I know that I ground out all of the loose and lifted fiberglass and filled the area with West Systems epoxy. I did not replace the embedded aluminum plates. I remounted the new hinges.
So now both of my hatches open and close nicely, but I have not gel-coated over the repair so it is not pretty.
Attached below is a picture before my repair. I don't have one afterwards.

Thanks Don and Rich. Both covers have the same issue and they look same as on Riche’s post and hinges are way too stiff

They have new hinges here on SBO. I did it by matching the picture. I don't recall exactly but it was the ones for a Hunter 43 or something like that. It was not specifically listed for the Hunter 40.5.

Here is the hinge I ordered from SBO and it fit perfectly.

Just for info, I operated one hinge mounting area and was not very happy with what I found. Somebody did a pretty lousy job, (picture attached) no wonder there were cracks.

It looks like you need to grind out and replace the embedded plates too. At least you will know you have a quality repair when you are done.
