I purchased a 1987 Legend 37 about a month ago and spend about 3 nights a weeks on the boat. I generally love the boat but I'm concerned about a soft crackling sound I hear from the cabin top. It's barely audible except at night when I turn in. My surveyor found nothing wrong with the hull or deck, and I have good confidence in him since he found delamination in some of my friends boats. Any similar experiences or thoughts?

Are you near a military facility

We have experienced the same thing when we tie up near the Newport News Navy Base. Locals tell me its white noise they introduce to prevent spying.

Compression post

David I noted a similar sound when I acquired my Legend 37.5 a few years ago. I ultimately traced the noise to a plastic access panel that surrounds the top of the compression post where it meets the ceiling of the cabin. In my case, the access panel had not been screwed in properly so it was flexing against the compression post as the boat rocked in the water. I was able to rescrew it in properly and the cracking noise stopped. However, if the access panel is not cut right, you may have to widen the hole to stop it from flexing against the post.
