I have just purchased a 2000 legend 290. This model does not have a back stay. I'm not familiar with this type of rigging. does anybody have experience with this type of rigging and can give me some know how on sailing it?

There are a number of write-ups on B&R rigging on the website here related to getting the tension right. As far as the actual sailing goes, there is nothing much different than a traditional rig except that that you can't let the sail out quite as far when on a downwind heading, thus running directly downwind does not work as well as just a deep broad reach.

Add to than not being able to add backstay tension to flatten the mainsail, or tension the forestay in a breeze.

will tension on the vang help tighten forestay tension?
A bit. And so will mainsheet tension when trimmed hard. But not nearly as much as it would a small keelboat, like a 420.

guess I best get my head cleaned out of racing stuff.... with no backstay, it was a cinch to launch from the crain. how do they handle in heavier air with the B&R rig, any idea?

The B & R rig allows for a bigger roach on the main giving more power so it's best to reef the main first before furling the jib. My H25 with the B & R rig handles high winds just fine and is quite fast so if racing interests you go for it as this is a well designed modern rig.

Really don't call the 290 Legend but any way I did own a 2000 H-290
not the fastest or the most room but di keep it for 6 years before moving
up to my 2007-H-36.It was a great sailing and did a few trips to Block Island
and Ct.from Long Island and sailing but much more tender than my H-36 and you just need to reef sooner and when the wind went over 15 knts it would round up if you don't reef.

You should be able to race just fine. As other have noted the B&R rig is a decent setup that has its own tuning procedure.

The B&R with a traditional triangular mainsail is not in the same class as new backstayless rigs with flat-top mains. These new rigs will have generally flatter cut full-batten mains, that twist off at the top when the breeze comes on, allowing them to a degree of self-regulation in extra pressure. When it gets lighter, the top of the sail comes back into airfoil shape, adding lift.

Actually, I'm kinda surprised that more people with B&R rigs do not switch to flat-tops! But check with your spar maker first! ;^)
