Who else has noticeable leeway on a 356 upwind? Did I make a mistake with the shoal keel? Am I strapping things in too tight? Is this one of those compromises I just need to live with? Other than that, the 356 has been everything I'd hoped for.

356 keel

Paul, you haven't mentioned your sailing style- it took me awhile to figure out the 356, too. the way Glenn designed the shoal keel on the 356 requires you to keep her moving-she sails best to windward nearly flat, and don't pinch up too much in gusts-reef early and often, and use the traveller to flatten the main in heavy air. I start to reef if its over 12-14 kts, and bring in the main a lot before i reef the jib. I did some testing with 18-22kts and found that reeefing to less than half of the main with full jib gained 1/2-3/4kt boatspeed. that inmind, we love her!
