Anyone know what size festoon bulbs are used in the running lights for a 1985 O'day 35? I want to replace them with LEDs and there seem to be 4 different sizes so I don't know what order.

I suppose I should have done my research a bit more before asking. I realize that LEDs are not approved for running lights. So unless anyone out there has a line on approved LEDs for running lights, never mind.

Why aren't they approved?

Running lights have to have certain angles of visibility and certain candle power to be seen at certain distances. How the light is generated shouldn't matter. For instance if you had an oil lamp like the old whaling boats or a battery operated latern they should still meet the requirements. So why are LED's not acceptable?

After doing some research on this site and on the bulb manufacturers sites, the only ones I've found that are Coast Guard approved are from Dr. LED. I'd just hate to have an "incident" and have the Coasties find insufficient LEDs to be the problem.

I am replacing my O'Day 35 original nav lights with Aqua Signal series 25 as they fit the attachment plates the best. Series 40s are too big. Contacted Dr LED as they got their Polar Star 40 bulbs for AQ series 40 CG certified. They said their Polar Star 25 bulbs for series 25 are not yet CG approved and only have a 1nm visibility. They are working on a 2nm visible Polar Star 25 bulb that will be 2nm visibility. They will get this new bulb CG certified for AQ series 25.

I bought 2 nm led festoons on E-Bay for about 1/2 of what everyone else is asking. (I also bought replacement led interior bulbs to replace my #1142 interior lights for $15 each). But exterior wise I only bought them for my stern light and my mast steaming light.
My question is: everything I read says that clear 2 nm festoon leds can't be used for a replacement for the clear festoon light bulb using my two color bow light and lense. And that I have to buy a separate bow light requiring separate red and green led's. Anyone know why ?? Seems to me a 2 nm clear filament bulb and a 2 nm clear led bulb should be interchangable. Hmmmmmmmmm.

because after most of the the light is filtered out by the colored lens, it isn't visible for 2nm anymore. You can only put colored LEDs behind colored lenses.
