This is a two part question:

1. Is there a LED lamp that can replace the original type of lamp on the cabin lights? If anyone has done this, what make and part number did you use and did the original socket work or did you have to make modifications?

2. Any knowledge of LEDs for the bow - stern - anchor?

Like most of you, battery conservation is an issue and LED lamp replacement apparently is one way to conserve. I prefer to save the battery so the automatic bilge has a full charge in case I'm miles away from the marina for a week or more during Kansas storm season. I know that the 23.5 hatch is known to leak once in a while.

Thanks in advance for any input.

LED Lights

There are many post on this topic in the forums. Maine Sail has done quite exahstive testing on LED's and published his findings along with pictures.

In my opinon, the high cost of the LED's he prefers are not worth the added cost for benefit, but I think the are avid readers so the type and color and look of the light is important to them. But you do have to comend and respect the experimentation and method because both are beyond reproach.

I have replaced all my fixtures down below with LED's and the power savings are amazing.
Mine are 1156 sockets ( single pole with 2 side tabs for locking the bulb in)

I payed about $3.00 a bulb on EBAY but a popped for 1 really good bulb over the chart table ($17.50)
You need to do some research and find out what type of sockets you have then you will have a jumping off point. I'm sure that what ever type you have they make an LED retrofit for it (this is America man, where there's a want, there's a product) I am currently researching LED replacements for Nav lights and Masthead but these have greater rules as far as Coast Guard and Insurance companies so care must be takenand this is not a place to cheap out.
There are many companies to order from (Dr. LED, Superbright LED's, and many more) But I've had good luck with plain old EBAY.

You talk about a battery, just one? Save the money you would spend on LED's and get a 2nd battery and perhaps a solar panel.

Thanks to everyone for the great info. My 23.5 is in covered storage 160 miles from my home. (Courtesy of the previous owner)

I purchased it in November and put it directly in storage. (Is it spring yet???) I've been reading a lot of the posts on this site in anticipation of sailing her for the first time. This site has provided exceptional information from knowledgeable sailors like yourselves .

Comment on Benny's post, I don't know the boat well enough to know if there is room for a second battery, that is the primary reason I was considering the LED lights.

Again, Thanks for all the info.

led replacement bulbs

About three years ago I replaced the 25 watt bulb in my Aqua Signal
40 bow light with a Dr. LED (I think) white bulb. Two years later all but two or three of the LED lights had burned out. I'm using an incandescent bulb again.
Just swapping out the bulbs did not seem to do it. But does one really have to spend a fortune to buy LED specific lamps?
