This is to follow up a discussion from a few weeks back regarding the (lack of) certification of LED nav lights. We received a press release today (see image) from Dr. LED announcing they are the first third-party mgf to be certified. I'm pleased to say we're one of the first marine stores to carry these; see link below.

COLREG

I don't believe USCG actually certify the product. The press release is somewhat missleading besides a significant spelling mistake. COLREG means Collison Regulation not COLOREG. COLREG only specify anchor light must be visible all around within 2 miles. Any light meet that condition will do. Actually all navigation lights have the same 2 miles visibility requirement. Even oil lamp will do.

Not quite, Alex

The COLREGS specs for lights is codified in the Federal Register at 33 CRF 84, and manufacturers need to adhere to those. The regs go into great detail as to candelas, color luminosity, angle of view and intensity from those angles, etc. Not all of us are engineers or care about the details, so the requirements are "dumbed down" for the rest of us for publication. Take a look at 33 CFR 84.15 for light intensity, and 84.19(b) stating that the rules for sailboats under way are different than power vessels.
