I have an extreem problem with heights, and want to reduce/avoid climbing the mast if at all possible. To that end, flirting with the idea of LED nav lights and anchor lights. That and the reduced electrical draw is nice too. Has anyone installed them? Likes Dislikes Visability, do you notice a difference are they brighter or is it just the color difference? Thanks in advance for facts and opinions.

My opinion

Is that they don't seem brighter until you see the two next to each other. They are different colors and I think that's what throws me off. As for the problem with heights...try this. Take your boat out into 45' of water, take your dinghy and float it next to the boat, then sink your boat. Now the mast is not so high anymore :) Replace the bulb and raise the boat when done :)

You know that putting the anchor light on top of the mast is not required. I had a Catalina 30 that had bad wiring and (for several reasons) I naver got to fixing it. I just hung a light off the standing rigging. West Marine has a cig lighter model that even has a photo cell to turn the thing on/off at dusk/dawn.

Thanks for the tips

I have built a new stern light. 9, 10mm superbright LED's. Ok, so I did have to turn it down a lot. I am still debating the anchor light, I like the idea of the light in the rigging. I may build something for that.

What is required?

Sorry this is a total newb question, but is a mast light required for anything but anchoring? Just wondering because mine isn't working either and I too have no desire to try climbing my mast. Thanks, Jeremy

Lighting requirements

THe attached link gives the requirements. I don't know your boat's size, but I would guess you fit in the under 20m class. :)
