Has anyone replaced the G4 halogen lights in the saloon of a 473 (or similar) with LED's - if so what did you use and where would you recommend as a source?

Thanks

What we used on our B352

I have replaced the G4 halogens with these: http://store.marinebeam.com/g4ledsmdpocl.html

They are a little pricey but they function over a broad voltage range, don't cause any interference with my electronics and work well with a dimmer (also found on that site).

Pop the cover, pull out the reflector, clip a couple mm off the leads, install and pop the cover back on. Brighter that the original halogens, draw less current available in a variety of colors/warmth.

Ouch, That's expensive.

I had a thread where I modified some $1.50 G4 Chinese Warm LED's. They work great.

That being said there was also another thread where there were G4 LED's with a voltage range of 10v-30v under $2 each, I think.

With the disc type LED with side pins you remove the reflector.

The LEDs point down so no reflector is needed.

Thanks, very helpful,

Do you permanently remove the reflector?
Yes, pull & toss the reflector. Not needed as all the LED's point straight down.

Actually bought them at Defender for a couple bucks less. Went with the X-beam LED series specifically for the voltage range, the chatter about RF interference from some cheap chinese units and the chatter about some of the cheap chinese units being a potential fire hazard when subjected to voltage surges.

As is often the case, the boat is 90 miles away or I would post photo's of the install.

Anybody out there have a reasonably priced LED replacement for the halogen reading lights??

Maybe your fixtures are different than my 323. The reflectors are not in the way, even if not needed. You may want to put the G4's in if/when you sell the boat and want to keep the LEDs.

I replaced several lights on my 311, including the anchor light, with LEDs. I had a small issue with one of the lights, and found the folks at Marinebeam to be exceptional in their quality of service. I'd buy from them again just because of the way the dealt with and resolved the problem.

I have used Marinebeam and agree with there great customer service. I replaced all the interior G4 overhead bulbs with the dual color red/white switchable unit. It is a great idea. From their website:

When initially switched on, its output comes from the three center RED LEDs. This provides a nice soft red output that is more than enough to light to see really well down below at night. This red start-up mode is really handy to prevent the loss of night vision, and avoids disturbing others down below. It is your choice whether you want Red or Warm White, and the control is all done using your existing switches.

After reading endlessly on this subject, I decided to install LED's from Lighting Matrix (constant current type). Installed 12 overhead lights (g4 - $2), 10 reading lights (M16 - $5), and 1 special AquaSignal anchor light with dimpled ends ($6.24) with great results.

I reckon something is different :)

I am just changing mine out with the Matrix LEDs from Bill in China.

They have what looks like a large capacitor on the reverse side. This means the reflectors must come out. Perhaps some others have lower profile electronics on the back?

Certainly keeping all my Halogens and Reflectors as spares.

Working well so far. Pretty happy.

Since it has been a year since you posted that you had bought the less expensive products from the fine folks in the East, I would be interested in knowing what your experience has been, as well as knowing which one of the G4 units you purchased.

Thanks in advance-
Stephen

Just been on the boat for a couple of months. All the LEDs are going great.

I think I would have gone a bit brighter if I was buying them again. I told Bill the existing wattages and he suggested equivalents.

They certainly as good a job as the original lights.

New Bene owner reviewing threads, so please excuse me bringing this back after a month. Just wanted to throw my vote behind the Marinebeam replacement bulbs. I replaced all the bulbs in our 331 with MBs and am very happy with them. The color and brightness is great and I believe the quality is worth the price.
