Like many owners faced with the need to replace my holding tank I'm spending more time pondering how exactly I will tackle the project than I will ever spent sitting on the head. Lately I am intrigued by the Lectasan as an option. I keep my boat in freshwater in Seattle but, as a rule, never use the head during day sailing. I do enjoy cruising in the San Juans where MSDI devices are legal outside of state parks and arenas. So I faced with installing a Lectasan and a small holding tank (for fresh water or marina emergencies) with a Y valve between the two. When I discussed this with the marine sanitation expert locally he described many maintenance problems with Lectasan and discouraged it. Any comments or suggestions from current Lectasan owners, particularly those who may also have a small holding installed? Thanks.

You'll LOVE the Lectra/San!

The "local marine sanitation expert"--whom I'd bet real money is the company named Marine Sanitation--lied (there's no other way to put it)...they badmouth ANYthing that competes with SeaLand equipment, especially the Lectra/San. In fact, when installed (VERY important!), operated and maintained according to directions, the Lectra/San will give you literally decades of trouble-free service...and the maintenance is minimal--just occasional (about once a year) cleaning--which doesn't even require taking anything apart, but only a solution of muriatic acid poured down the toilet according to directions. Since parts of Puget Sound are more brackish than salt, it might be advisable to install the appropriate optional salt tank for your toilet...or when you get a "low salt" light, you can just add two tablespoons (1 coffee measure) of table salt to the flush. The holding tank has no impact on the operation of the Lectra/San at all...the flush either goes overboard through the L/S or into the tank...if it goes into the tank, you deal with it the same way you've been dealing with your existing holding tank.
