Has anyone installed a Lectra San on a Hunter 40? If so, where did you locate the unit? I would like to install one on the aft head. Any suggestions where to locate the unit?

You should be asking about installing an ElectroScan

The Lectra/San is now obsolete...the Electro Scan is the current version and is a huge improvement over the LectraSan.

Never mind where anyone else has installed it...Your first step should be: Read the installation instructions...you can download and print 'em from here: http://www.raritaneng.com/products/waste_treatment/electroscan.htm They should answer most of your questions about where and how to install it. Any questions they don't answer can be answered by Vic Willman at Raritan. He's the tech services manager, been there 36 years, and has forgotten more about everything they've ever made than I or anyone else will ever learn. 800-352-5630 x 6. Don't talk to anyone BUT him!!!

However, I'll give you a jump start: it needs to be installed within 6' of the toilet AND within 6' of its discharge thru-hull. There are also limitations as to where it should relative to the level of the toilet, but there are workarounds to deal with that, which Vic can help you work out.

I suggest that you consider a Purasan. Same principle as the Lectra Scan only that it eliminates the need to add salt. Installation is about the same. On my h41 I installed my Purasan in the bilge right under the salon table. I have the fore and aft head feeding into the Purasan. Works great.

Purasan vs. Electro Scan

The PuraSan Raritan Purasan can be an excellent choice for boats in fresh or brackish water and toilets that use onboard pressurized flush water...that what it was designed for.

The advantage: It costs less and draws less amperage than the Lectra/San or ElectroScan because it uses supplied chemical from a cartridge instead of electrodes in salt water.

The disadvantage: the solid bock of chemical (halon) in the cartridge lasts about 800 flushes--about a season in most places, maybe 2 seasons where the sailing season is short--requiring replacement of the entire cartridge at a cost of about $100 including shipping. Because it's rated HAZMAT, which adds a whopping shiipping surchage, few if any boat supply retailers carry it...so it has to be ordered directly from Raritan. And you cannot use anything else instead.

You'll prob'ly want to read the manual for both devices to determine which is the best choice for your boat.

John...how far apart are the heads on your boat? Specs for the LectraSan, ElectroScan and PuraSan all require that the treatment tank be within 6' of the toilet...'cuz that's as far as most toilets can move bowl contents in the amount of time anyone will spend flushing one...and bowl contents have to get TO the device to be treated. So connecting two toilets to the same device should only be done if it can be located within 6' of both of 'em.

Re: Purasan vs. Electro Scan

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Actually I am about 7 feet from the aft head and about 12 feet from the forward head. A little far. I do flush a couple of times just to be sure. I have had the unit operating for about 1 year. No problems, no odors. The h41 has limited options as to where to install any type of unit. Having had the Lectra/San for over 6 years I do prefer the Purasan. Being a livaboard I do use the unit and the tablet is still going strong.
