Leaving the prop free to spin while sailing.

My Beneteau 432 has a leviathan three bladed prop capable of pushing her along at 8 + knots no problem. When sailing I have noticed that I experience considerable speed gains if I let the prop spin free in neutral rather than locking it in reverse. Has anyone else experienced this. The speed gains when I allow the prop to spin free while under sail are on the order of 1 knot plus. Note; this is with the engine off. Some sailors have suggested that transmission damage can eventually result from doing this. I know others who always let the prop spin. Anyone have any comments on this issue other than suggesting a folding prop. regards, Fraser

free spinning

I have a 440 and get 1/2 to 1 knot gain in free spin. A hurth trans. can free spin but keep check on fluid. Not all trans. are made to do this. Check your owner's manual.
