One of my crew came through. Well, actually, he hadn't bailed but there was a bit of miss-communication. The only issue is that we have to go straight through to Stamford, CT non stop which means going through New York Harbor tired. However, we've both made the trip before.

The weather looks promising:

There will be a bit more wind than I like for a long leg but Strider loves a reach and the wind vane will work well on all probable points of sail so we won't need to steer except for traffic.

It would still be nice to have a third watch stander so, if anyone is at loose ends and can be in Atlantic City tomorrow before noon....

Long run...

Wow, that's a long run of about 137 miles...watch the tides in the East River, you can't fight them!

can't stress the truth in robmfcc's post enough. Seems like you've made the trip before, but...while dockmaster at an unnamed "we-own-the-boat" club in LI, I did witness a (be nice) very well-meaning man capsize a 24' runabout simply with a hard-over while heading up river against the tide. Be well, lads/ lasses.

We'll probably nip inside Sandy Hook and wait for the tide if we make better time than expected. A better option will be some sail reduction for a more comfortable pace to hit the "sweet spot".

Aside from not wanting to burn a lot of unnecessary diesel fuel, I'm pretty comfortable with tide current after Passamquoddy Bay and the Bay of Fundy. I went through Hell Gate on the way down and found it pretty over rated. I ran the Reversing Falls on the Saint John before slack and could feel the boat drop under me as she started down. I've also gone through the better named Hell Gate in Maine which is about two boat lengths wide with the GPS reading just 1 - 2 knots.

Strider is very quick and nimble which makes it easier to deal with turbulent water. Here's a video of going through the Old Sow whirlpool off Eastport:

1 day too soon!

Roger ... I probably could have made it to Atlantic City Saturday, but tomorrow is cutting it too close. I'm glad you've got at least one crew! Fair winds!

I went through plum gut againt the tide at peak flow on a hylas 70 (delivery, capt didnt care, said whats 3kts, we make 10 normally, and its only diesel...) with the waters just like that, and we were spun and tossed just the same. Pretty odd feeling a 70 foot boat spin 30 degrees to port, and 30 degrees to starboard in just a couple seconds ..

Hells Gate

Roger,

If you found Hell's Gate overrated, you hit it at the right time! If you had said, "I sh*t my pants going through there", you hit it at the wrong time.

For a trip up the East River, I generally figure to be at the Battery an hour before high tide, makes for a nice easy ride and you start to get the push into the Long Island Sound on the other end of Hell's Gate.

We seen 12 knots in the East River and we were only making turns for 5 knots, there was no traffic coming the other way.

Actually raymarine has had the helm for the last 4hrs. I was just standing watch.

About 5nm from sandy hook, going to drop anchor for a bit there and we should get a good couple hours sleep before the current swings for the trip up the husdon and east river.
