Leaning to port

I took delivery of my 2012 e36 in April 2012 and have noticed a slight tendency for the boat to be leaning to port when in calm air with no current and sails down. At first I thought it was my imagination and I basically ignored it but I seem always to be aware of it whenever I am tied up or when I am idling out of the marina. This weekend I was tied up alongside several other sailboats at a local boating destination and it was clearly noticable when I stood back and looked at the mast in relation ship to other boats. The mast seems to be rigged correctly and looks perpendicular to the boat decks by eye. I also checked the shroud lengths on both sides and they were within 1/8 inch of each other. I could clearly see at the water line however, that my e 36 is riding lower on the port side by about 2 inches (using the bottom white stripe as the reference point against the waterline). Further, by eye it definitely looks to be low on the port side when using the decks as a reference.

I rationalized that perhaps a full water tank, fuel tank, holding tank, equipment in the port locker etc. might be the issue but upon review of the tank layout and with an almost empty holding tank and with maybe 50 lbs of equipment in the port side locker this theory didn't seem to hold water (no pun intended).

Any thoughts, ideas, explanation, would be appreciated. I assume that Hunter engineered the boat to be level when in a neutral state so I am baffled by this. Is this normal?

I previously owned a H356 that leaned to port and thought it was the battery location in the port locker. Not sure that the e36 had the same battery configuration.

The old 34's lean to starboard.. I end up putting all heavy stuff I can (tools, engine spares, full water tank..etc) on port side and have it almost squared away.. It won't bother you after a few years, and does not affect sailing noticeably..
Batteries can sometimes be moved to correct things like a slight list.. ENJOY the boat ~!

It's new. Load 'er up! :):):)

Seriously, our boats came that way and it was a big point of discussion for the first few years, then went away.

This was written in the late 80's - the boat started production in 1986.

We've found lots more amusing things to keep us on our toes! :)

Congratulations on your new boat, just saw the writeup in 48 North, sweet. Very similar to our layout. Enjoy.

Greg, Claude hit the nail on the head. H34's have a 2* starboard heel when first launched. Once gear is stored aboard and port-side water tank filled, it sits almost level.

Shift your gear to Starboard and get out and enjoy the boat!

It's amazing how little moving stuff around inside changes the list.

A couple years ago our live a board neighbor called and said that she thought my H34 was leaning to starboard "more than normal". Since she works in the shop office, did I mind if they took a look inside using the set of keys they have for my boat.

Turns out when he was there a few days before, some big dummy (me) had left his normally loaded tool box sitting on the dinette table against the storage compartments to starboard.

I've since moved the house batteries from the starboard quarter to under the dinette bench, just slightly off the keel line, and can notice a difference.

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions. The e36 has all of its storage to port. You would think given this that Hunter would have favored a starboard lean when empty but no it has a port lean when empty. When you add gear the lean gets worse. Poor design in my opinion. I fixed the problem by adding 650 lbs of lead to starboard in variuos nook and crannies and now all is well except my pocket book as 23 25 lb bags of lead shot cost me $975. I will submit the receipts to Hunter.

Wow, now all you need is some powder and reloading equipment and you're good...

My dealer added lead to my starboard side and it solved the problem before taking her home and no $$$ to me.
But a year or two later I removed the lead and moved my batteries from the port to the starboard side.
The lead is laying on my step sons property on eastern LI,NY.
