Lealea in Alaska

Looks like we will be wintering in Petersburg. Easy internet access so I can stay in touch. The library is close to the harbor (Everything is close to the harbor in this town of 3000 souls) Everyone want to know "Did you rally sail that little boat all the way from Hawaii?" d8^)
It's a real friendly town and we are looking forward to getting to know the community. It is going to be cold though. We passed a couple of small icebergs on the way in.

Well done - another epic voyage! Although I do wonder why anyone
would choose to go to somewhere cold and wet when they could have
stayed in paradise :). I have just had a look where you are and it
even looks cold on Google Earth!

I am amazed that you seem to be so comfortable and content with 2 of
you on a Vega for such long voyages! I am impressed to say the
least... I only managed 2000 nm before it drove me insane and all I
wanted to do was get off the damn thing and sell it! How do you
occupy yourselves? Do you find you get a bit depressed after 4 or 5
days at sea?

Anyway - I hope the weather is not too cold for you and good luck with
the repairs. I had exactly the same issues on Cirrus but it is the
new owners problem now. I did consider trying to get replacements
made but never got around to it. The mainsheet track was always a bit
dodgy on Cirrus and the locking screws used to loosen up sometimes so
maybe a replacement track would have been a sensible solution?

Just off to have a look at your recent videos...

John I would like to jump in her just to make a couple comments. I did
some ocean sailing years ago in a Yokahoma 21 pretty small and tight
fitting even for one. But my wife and I did a lot of coast wise sailing
on her and had a great time. I and we, were so busy we never had the
time to get bored or claustrophobic. We found it hard to find time to
read and do nothing. I kept up pretty close with your posts and was
amazed at the feelings you had. Still your not alone. I have heard
almost horror stories about people being miserable after days at sea. I
am in no way finding fault with you because your experience is not
unique. Doug

Yes Doug, I am beginning to think that some people are just not cut
out for being alone for long periods - me included! The chap I shall
be crossing the Atlantic with said he had exactly the same feelings as
myself (after his trip from Spain to Porto Santo) but after 8 days he
was back to normal - so maybe it is just a function of the brain
getting used to "unusual" circumstances. I shall be able to compare
solo V "in company" sailing after my next trip. It will be
interesting to see if I fare any better! Certainly hope so...

John I once heard a fellow say that his wife got depressed and stayed
that way on long passages. He said she believed she had a very mild sea
sickness. She wasn't sick at her stomach. She began using some medicine
for it and never had the problem again. I guess that is possible you
might try it and see if it helps. Doug

I can only say that we love it. We would rather be at sea than in port, but of course in Alaska in the winter there really is no option. We'll be fine and in the spring we will resume exploring this fantastic cruising ground. It is simply amazing here.
