I have been surfing online for advise about leaky shroud chainplates. ( I have a 1981 H22). Everyone recommends a re-bed, but some say use 3m 5200 and some say not. And the process for doing it is not so clear either. Is there an official or best way to re-bed these things on a '81 Hunter 22. anybody know anyone in the eastern LI area who does this kind of work?

the problem with 5200 sealant is...

once you use it as an sealer or adhesive, it's permanent . If you ever have to disassemble a part again it will tear off the gel coat and most likely part of the fiberglass. I suggest using a 4200 or even a silicone.

LifeCaulk

Life Caulk or other generic polysulfide sealant is recommended for sealing the chainplate slot through the metal cover (known as the "beauty plate"). Under sail, the chainplate can move relative to the deck and you need a sealant with enough flexibility to tolerate that movement. The down side to polysulfides is that the seal needs to be redone every couple of years. If you do it before the seal loses its watertightness, the process only takes about an hour, including masking the deck and beauty plate with tape. You also won't have to remove the shrouds. I think I posted a descripion of the process a while back, so you may want to check the archives. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"
