My manual Lofrance windlass (model: Royal) leaks a bit of oil; is there some gasket or something that needs to be replaced? And what oil does a windlass use such as Lofrance to replace the lost oil?

Here's the Lofrans Parts list

and I'll look a little more for a manual for your windlass. The link to the exploded view is below: http://www.lofrans.it/esplosi/schemi/B02101.pdf I'm afraid that you're on your own from here. Steve Alchemist C-320

might consider making your own gasket

It's easy. Just get a standard office folder, cut out the basic shape and put it on the surface. Then take a light hammer and tap around the edges. You now have a gasket. Apply a little glue and bolt together. As far as oil, it's not a high RPM machine so I would just make a guess from the thinkness of the oil as to what grade (30, 40, 80 or 90 weight) it is and replace with a standard automotive oil.

Thanks for the response

I have printed out the blow up of the parts of my windlass. In the related link, I didn't see any seals listed for the "Royal" model. To display my ignorance what is Permatex Ultra Blue and what is it commonly used for?

Seals and glue

Seals aren't the same as gaskets. Gaskets are used between two pieces of metal that are bolted together. Seals are round and go around things like shafts. They have a rubber type inside and metal outside. The rubber fits snuggly against the shaft to stop liquid from leaking out. If your seal is leaking, then you need to get that exact part. If it's a gasket, you can make your own. Glue...that glue is just a automotive gasket glue that can be bought at any parts store for about $3.
