I have decided to have a dodger and new bimini made, in part to stop rainwater from coming in the poorly designed companionway. I know a simple cover would be less expensive, but I think I have decided to go this way. Anyone else done this/have any suggestions? -Jon

Leaky Companionway Hatch

Just had a dodger installed on our 31 last week, partly to prevent water from entering through the companionway doors which I installed last year. No rain yet so I can't tell you anything in that regard but we do like the extra protection from the sun provided by the dodger.

Both.

Jon: We have both. First we got the companionway cover to keep dirt, water and insects from entering the boat. A few years ago we added a dodger. This provides shade to the boats cockpit and interior. If you boat is in Florida, you should consider have ALL the windows made to be zipped out. We had sun screens made for ours. We zip out the plastic and zip in the sun screens. If you leave the plastic in during the summer months the cockpit becomes a hot house. In the winter we leave the companionway cover snapped in place while we are aboard to keep water out while we are aboard and it is raining but we do not want the board in. This allows a good combination to keep us dry and warm and still get some ventilation too.
