I wonder if any owners of the Catalina 22 has had any experience with the boat leaking only while under sail or motoring? I cannot find the source of the leak - bow or stern or keel area. It does not seem to take on water while in the slip or at anchor. I thought I would ask prior to having the boat yanked out of the water to have it inspected and repaired. My boat neighbor thinks it might be a leak around the keel. Any thoughts? Tom (tom@nervline.com)

Places to look

Check the through bolts for leakage at the lower rudder gudgeon, check the keel hold down bold for leakage around the threads (to stop, coat the threads heavily with grease and reinstall) Water may be splashing up through the rubber hose for the keel cable while sailing.

Lower Rudder Gudgeon

Greg hit it on the head. I had the same problem, especially when motoring. The lower gudgeon goes underwater and leaks. You wont see the leak in the lazerette. The water goes down inside the transom and then runs into the "bilge" area. I made a rubber gasket for the lower gudgeon and the boat is dry as can be now.

Where exactly does it accumulate?

If you could pinpoint the area where it accumulates, it would help narrow the source down. I had a leak on my trunk where the keel locking bolt had once bee. There was damage there that the P/O had "fixed" When sailing, the boat would heel, and the keel would push against the locking pin, and allow the crack there to open wider. The crack was above the waterline normally, but the water would force it's way up inside the trunk while sailing.

Keel Lock Bolt

leaks while underway, but not any other time. Solution is to put some grease around the threads so that they become water tight. The other well known source of leaking while underway is the sink drain valve. You must turn the valve OFF so that water pressure does not make it into the cabin. Regards, Ted

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to make the suggestions. I will check all these items out on my boat and post an update once I figure out the source of the leak. Thanks again. Tom
