Hello All, I had my boat(H26)on the Gippsland lakes for a week over X-mas. After sailing each day we noticed that there was water in the bilge and in the under seat storage compartments in the cabin, one day we took in so much water that the mattress in the twin berth was wet. I have tasted the water and it is salty, and no I dont have a porta-potti. There are no obvious cracks and the cocks to the exterior dont appear to be leaking. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have any suggestion what area of the boat is the most likely culprit. Thanks

Here is where to look

Lynn; There are several places to check as it would appear the leak is through the hull. If you have any instruments with thru hull fittings, check for tightness of the knot meter and also the caulking around the thru hulls. The next place is the wing nut and the drain bail plug to close off the air. There is a gasket on the underside of the washer. If it is worn out, replace. Is the drain bail plug tight going in and if loose, turn it to make it bigger. The next area which I would suspect is the area of the centerboard housing under the commpression post area. There is a cover plate which may be one piece or two pieces which depended on the year the boat was built. It is held in place either with screws or caulking. Take off. You will see a glob of cauling over a large bolt head. There are several things to look at in this area. You will note the compression post sitting on a stainless steel plate. Where the compression post sits into the plate, you may see a screw or a screw hole. There will be one on the front and the back side(back side you can see). If there is a hole with no screw, insert a #10 by 24 screw with 5200 caulk. Do it on the front too which is a pain to get to. This would be one source. The next source would be the caulking between the plate and top of the fiberglass housing the plate rests on. To determine if that is leaking, the boat will need to be in the water and motor at high speed. If you see water coming out, then that is your source. Simply clean up, dry with alcohlol and force in 5200 with your hand as if you are filling a bearing. Another source is the bolt head if it is not caulked. The next step with the boat in the water and folks standing in the rear, check the back end through the acess in the rear berth to determine if it is the hull to deck seam. If it is, then you may need to pull the rub rail off and repair. Also look at the lower gedgeon of the rudder assembly too. The next item to check is the thru hulls and the hose connections from both sinks. When the boat heels over it could come through there. I believe your source of water is from one of the above. If you cannot find it at that point, then Put dye for example red cool aid mix and alot of it in the tank to see if the water seepage is coming from the tank but I seriously doubt it. Good luck and advise us what you find. Crazy Dave

Wow Dave, You Really Do Know Your Stuff!

Thats some great information, I was always wondering what it was like under that compression post. Lynn, please let us know where you find the leak. Good Hunting, Bob.
