I have traced a cabin leak to a stanchion.
The stanchion has a "star" bolt and an escutcheon plate to the deck.
1. What is the easiest and best way to remove the stanchion?
2. What is the best material to stop the leak and reset the stanchion?
Thanks
Dave

Additonal Info

"star" bolt is on stanchion
Escutcheon has no screws or bolts. Afraid to pry it up and not damage the deck.

If it is anything similar to the Beneteau 361 then this is no good news. In order to remove a stanchion on the Ben361 you need to remove the locknut inside the boat below the deck. I tried to do it for a couple of stanchions with no success. The access inside was simply impossible. I gave up in the end and put some Sikaflex 291i around the base of the stancion outside. It worked fine.

Totally agree with Philip. I lost a wrench down along the hull trying to reach and tighten a stansion nut blindly

Seems like boat manufacturers should take a course in ease of access for maintenance. Its incredible the things that get "lost" while attempting a repair.

Tying a lanyard to a tool and the other end to your belt helps to save some of them from becoming extra ballast in the bilge, or if you are working topside, from finding their way over the side. It does nothing for accessibility however.

Agree with Doug. Yesterday i started taking out the B323 shore power connector. Somehow the factory put it in with a smaller hole than Hubbel called for- by 1/4 inch! I had to demolish the fitting to get it out. Now have to drill a hole 1/8 or 1/4 inch bigger than OEM. A simple take out/install has turned into a major operation. The fitting must have been installed to the deck pan before it was glued to the hull.

I decided to avoid any stanchion leaks lurking in my 331's future by going around and tightening all those huge stanchion nuts inside the boat. Some I could get to with only minor swearing, sweat, and tears. And that was with a special offset ratchet attachment. For the others, I've been trying a few minutes of directed and intense mind control each time I'm on the boat. So far so good. :D
