I recently had a PSS installed on my Hunter 356. I noticed this weekend that it still leaks a small amount of water. I have called the dealer who installed it but have not received a call back. Is it normal to have a leak? Is it okay to use the boat with the PSS leaking slightly?

PSS

Jim PSS is a Shaft Seal Packless Sealing System that is supposed to be drip free and maintenance free. I had one installed to avoid the hassles with the normal stuffing box.

No, Not Normal, Roger

Could be two things. First: damage to the O-Rings during assembly. Second: the bellows is not compressed as per spec. It should not leak. It will throw some graphite around when new. I think I'd be careful using it until the dealer checks it. If he has to re-compress the bellows, he MUST use lock-tight or similar on the set screws. Rick D.

Nope.

Hello Roger, It is not normal for your seal to leak once installed. There are two common things that take place to create this problem. First is the adjustment at install. Was the compression used the correct amount? Second is that the installer used oil to move the rotor down the shaft and it worked itself onto the carbon face. The seal will not function for some time with oil on the face. I would suggest that you speak with the installer to see if they followed the installation instructions and forward your thoughts to me so that we can check them together. kwoody@pyiinc.com Thanks for the note and I look forward to talking to you soon. Kevin
