I am getting leaks thru the windows of my catamaran. The plexiglass windows look like they were gasket fitted (1997), maybe hot sealed. 3/4 inch width of gasket is exposed. The gasketing is separating (very fine gaps) at some points. Silicone is too thick. I need some feedback on a thinner liquid sealent/adhesive that can be cleaned up. The gasket is black. Boat is white. A clear or black material would be best. Thanks,

Rubber on rubber is tough to seal

Hi bobd - I have had similar problems with windows that are sealed on the outside. The best way to deal with them is to dig out as much of the old sealant as possible. Once you've gotten as much cleaned out as you can, use mineral spirits or acetone (use gloves!) to get remaining residue off. I'd tape and apply a bead of polysulfide sealant like GE's "Silpruf" - good for windows and re-bedding chainplates (available in several colors). Just a suggestion. Best, Trevor

Butyl tape.

Bob: You may want to try some butyl tape. This is basically the stuff that they use on automotive windows. It stay soft and plyable indefinitely. It is also a good material for bedding stanchions and other deck mounted gear. I believe that you can get it in assorted colors too.

Clear thinnable sealer

Marine Goop is clear, and can be thinned to whatever consistency you like using toluol (toluene) which is available at Ace Hardware. Try it, you'll LIKE it! Bob Cowgill Cocoa, Florida E-mail:rcowgill@cfl.rr.com
