We recently bought a 1982 37C. During survey soft area was found on the deck, aft and starboard of mast. Down below water was noted dripping down mast (not too much water). Previous owner noted the leak and installed a mast boot in attempt to resolve the leak. Why the mast boot on a keel stepped mast? It has not rained in this area for a few weeks, so where was water coming from? Initial plan is to cut into the deck in the noted soft area and inspect it. Also will remove mast boot and collar in attempt to locate source of water. The water may have been squeezed out during repeated stepping on the soft area during the survey. Any ideas or experience with this problem and how to fix it?

Soft H37C decks.

Unfortunately there are almost too many ways for water to get in to count. The mast partners can let water run down the mast and into the bilge. But they can also allow water into the deck coring. Other nearby sources are the handrails, the staysail traveler, the dorade boxes, and the hatch just aft of the mast. The sources of water in the sidedecks include the above plus the side trim and the portlights.

... check the archives for a detailed explanation of drilling and injecting epoxy/fiberglass. It takes some time, careful prep and drying, but is not complicated. Also, West Marine sells an excellent booklet for about $3 on how to do fiberglass work, and that includes step by step instructions with illustrations on repairing rotted cores. Look for the book on a rack in the same area they sell WestSystems stuff. The instructions apply to any expoxy/fiberglass work, not just their products. Good luck. Sanders
