Anyone tried to repair or replace water tanks in an '82 36ft yet? Just starting a refit and I know one or both leak into the bilge. Are the tanks built-in or drop-in tanks with fiberglass around them. I'm working on portals, thru-hulls and wiring first, built I keep looking at the settees and think it might be time to pop the top off to discover what's underneath. Any comments or pics would help me figure out what I'm getting myself into. Thanks

Where is the leak?

Do you know where the leak is? I replaced the water outlet on the port side tank a couple of years ago, and found a small leak on one of the screws that secures the top to the tank. I hae not had a problem with the starboard tank. I beleive they are molded in. If you were to remove the top it would expose the baffles and would allow a good thorough cleaning of the tank, but it reprsents a lot of work. I do not think I have any leaks, but I have had problems in the past when the tanks are full there is a tendancy for the water to leak out thought the view/access port seal until the water level drops, especially if the boat is healing while under sail. Good luck with yours, and would be interested in hearing how it turns out should you decide to take the top off. Ernie

Don't know where leak is, just fills up bilge

Ernie, I don't know where the leak is. Boat is sitting on hard right now. Bilge continued to fill up with water (fresh not salt). Continued until I drained both tanks as part of the refit (I'm replacing all hoses). Well, the tanks need to be cleaned anyway. I'll take some photos and post them for posterity. Any suggestions, tips, hints, and lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.

Curious, . . .

how much like or unlike the H37C is your H36? Are your tanks aluminum and under each settee, port and starboard? There is a photo forum essay in the archives(Related Link) that describes the removal for the H37C. Probably not the same since Ernie mentioned removing the tops. No tops to remove on the H37C.

leaking tank

I have a "81 30' that had a leak from the tank. After pulling the cover off, it appears the tank was formed in using fiberglass and it looks to be original equipment. The leak was obvious as the baffled had worn or cracked the glass on the inside. Cleaned and preped the entire interior of the tank then laid a coat of thicken and white pigmented West epoxy over the entire interior of the tank. Looks great - no leaks and it's been two years. Sorry no pics.

Some leakage

has been observed when the tanks are filled all the way up into the fill line. Have not isolated completely. Found that the port fill line where it connects to the deck fill fitting leaked some water, which was easily fixed. Our tanks sound to be the same setup as yours. Ours are plastic/fiberglass and glassed into the hull/pan(?). I've never removed the covers and believe that the seals between the tank and cover on the outside, forward end of the tanks leak when the water level is above the seal (i.e., filled up into the fill line). Judging by the amount of sealant that has oozed from the seal, I think the previous owner may have removed the covers at some point. Our inspection ports are in the aft end of the cover. I've been able to clean the inside of the tank to the extent that the baffles allow. If I fill the tanks leaving about an inch or two of space below the cover, I have not experienced any leakage under any sort of heel. I can live with this small loss of capacity in exchange for avoiding tearing apart the setees. If you are detecting leakage except when the tanks are empty, it would appear the integrity of the tanks themselves is in question. I would do a thorough check of all fresh water lines before taking the woodwork apart. Good luck and keep us posted. Mike s/v Charisma 82 H36

check the hot water heater

The fresh water in my bilge comes from rusty fittings at the hot water tank, which are on my list to replace... the tanks actually seem fine. S
