Water tank question. The water tank on my '83 model 31 has started to leak. Haven't seen the water leak out yet so I am not sure exactly where the leak is, but I know I am running out of water far too soon. Planning to remove the top cover for inspection but wondering if I find a place that looks suspect, what is the best way to repair it? Epoxy resin and glass cloth or some other sealer? Do not use the water for drinking but do like to use it for tooth brushing, dishwashing, etc. Want to be sure not to poision myself. Thanks for any help.

Leaky water tank

Bill, My water tank was leaking out the top. I thought I'd take the top off and re-caulk it. Wrong. It won't come up. I think the factory used 5200 on it. I talked to the people at Fisheries Supply and they suggested a type of liquid caulk that filled the seam. It has worked so far, and thats been about two years ago. To back up a minute, mine was leaking when I filled it, and the cushions were wet underneeth. Good luck, Craig Faithful Girl H-31

Same problem with our '87 H31. We haven't done any extended cruising yet so haven't refilled the water tank. No more wet cushions yet. The former owner recaulked around the top of the tank with what looks like 5200 but apparently this didn't stop theleaking. I'm willing to bet the farm that there are many similarly Hunter-designed water tank installations that have the same problem

Fixed mine - no problem

Bill... had same problem. First, I removed the lid. To do this, I used Lifecaulk caulk remover, it disintegrated the old cauld enough to dig it out, and therefore break loose the lid. I cleaned it up, and recaulked with silicone lifecaulk, making sure to do the screw holes also. I also added another inspection port on the other side of the diagonal baffle in the tank, so I can hand wash the inside of the tank on both sides of the baffle. During the lid re-caulk, I found those 1983 hoses to be nasty inside (filler hose and vent hose). I replaced them. They could be the source of your leak. The secret in the lid removal is to use lots of caulk solvent to melt the old caulk, but keep the area well ventilated while you're using it.
