Do any of your have advice on correcting the peristant leaking through the upper shroud deck fitting which dribbles down the chainplate and soaks (rots) the wooden bulkhead in my cabin? I've taken the deck plate off, sealed with 3M 4200 but it still leaks! I have an '89 C22. Many Thanks!! Henry

butyl tape rules

Try some butyl tape. You can get it at an RV store. It is very inexpensive. I have used it for my chain plates with great success. It is so easy to use.

Windows

Check the WINDOWS. I thought it was the chainplate fitting for a year. I am now convinced that it is the windows leaking, which makes more sense since there is a lot more area of window perimeter than chainplate. I bought the sealing kit here (No, I don't work here) and did the front windows last weekend. I went up after a big rainstorm and didn't see the usual leakage from the wet locker. The boat still had leakage, but I think it is from the other windows, further aft. The first two windows were a royal pain, four hours a piece, but it seems like it will be worth it when I finaly get through. BBooth

A possible solution

While this applies to earlier C-22's, it might be applicable to you. The chain plate eye may not be aligned properly causing the toggle on the bottom of the turnbuckle not to "toggle"properly and place an improper sideways stress on the chain plate eye and cause it to leak. The upper shroud chain plate eye should be aligned athwartships or so that if you looked at it from the stern you can see through it. This permits a better pivoting action by the clevis pin in the chain plate eye while the toggle allows for fore and aft motion. The lower shroud chain plate eyes should be aligned in a "x" pattern facing in towards the mast as do the upper shroud chain plate eyes. Use a vise grip locking pliers to hold the chain plate eyes in place while you tighten them from inside. Further, the toggle below the turnbuckle may be bent causing an improper pull in the chain plate. Finally, use a Loos tension gauge to ascertain you are not possibly over tightening the shrouds and stays.

Re-bed Again?

If you are convinced it is thru the chainplate, next time you take it apart let it dry out real well, force marine epoxy into the hole and surrounding area between deck layers and after it hardens redrill to proper bolt size, and again use a good sealer when you replace the shroud fitting. hello henry, the chainplates can sometimes rotate a bit under tension, braking the seal. CATALINA DIRECT has a retrofit, larger diameter with a welded flange drilled for two screws to keep them from moving 1-800-959-7245 john
