One of my stanchions has a leak. I pulled it off and found it was bedded with sillycone by PO. I have a few questions on my thoughts of repair. The stanchion was mounted on a 3"x3" stainless plate, this is in addition to the stanchion base, maybe 2 1/2" x 1 1/2". So my plan is to cut the top layer of the deck just smaller then this plate clean out as much deck core as I can in this almost 3x3 hole. I then want to fill this with thickened epoxy and install stanchion with butyl bedding.

So some questions. IS that to big of a hole to just fill with epoxy? What will remove the sillycone for sure? Since this repair will be covered by the 3x3 plate does it need to be topped, as in gel-coat or paint? Thanks Greg

Worked for me. I had a number of stanchions, pulpit mounts, and deck cleats that had this issue. I opened up the deck with a roto-zip by basically connecting the existing holes. I got out what coring I could (using a hook and/or wire to get around the edges).

I then filled the void with epoxy that was heavily loaded with chopped glass fibers, making sure that I pushed it back into the voids.

For remounting I put much beefier backing plates on since I know the deck won't have the full integrity it had previously.

I had no issues with the repairs - no leaks, no cracks, etc.

Good luck!

Yes that is much to big. You'll need to glass in some core..
