Hi again peggy et al, the original post was 9/24/04 I just returned and my digital camera dies. so no photos, The lids are 24" by 48" with what appears to be no 8 or larger screws every 4" or so around the perimeter. regarding a gasket, would it be a sheet that covers the 2 x 4 surface with holes for the screws and no adhesive or caulk or would it be a cut our 2" strip for example, that was cut from a 2' x 4' sheet of butyl rubber or the like Thanks John

Strips.

John: This is what I am in the process of doing. I got a roll of 1 1/2" butyl rubber. I then cut it to length and radiusd the corners. I am going to use silicone caulking on the top and the bottom of the rubber. I tried just caulking the bottom, but found it still leaking, so the plan is to put a double bead on top of the seal. I will then place the lid on the tank and place the four corner screws in place (but not tightened down. I am going to let the caulk cure overnite and will finish screwing down the lid after 10-12 hours.

strips cont

Steve, Thanks for the input, Are you going to pre puch the holes where the screws will to to prevent twisting or displacing the "gasket" or doyou feel the screws will penetrate right thru if you let the caulk dry long enough to hold everything in place.

Not a problem.

John: If you are using Butyl Rubber, you will not have any problem. The screws go right thru the gasket and will also form a seal. I am going to remove the lid this weekend and caulk the top of the strip. I will double caulk the strip and put the lid in place with 4 corner screws and let the caulk cure for 10-12 hours. The I will replace all of the screws and make them all secure.
