Discovered dry rot of very poor choice of wood by Hunter. They had anchored the tool tray in the motor box to some pulpwood spacers, and years of companionway leaking destroyed them. Teak frame is fine. What' are the fixes for the leaks after I install teak where the pulpwood was?

The leaks are from water getting past your drop boards? Or is it coming from somewhere else?

Hunter probably did not think that the tool tray would be a source of water intrusion.

I suggest that you get a canvas cover for your companionway. We did this many years ago with our previous boat and also on our current one. It keep water, dirt and "some creatures" out of the boat.

PS: You can purchase one on this website.

Yeah, those boards and lexan pieces are worn and maybe slightly warped from age and use. Thanks for the tip; can't think of anywhere else that's close. Have just put on a new and improved companionway cover. That may help.

Well, I'm currently in the middle of a complete ripout and replace of our companionway bulkheads and engine enclosure due to rot caused by the previous owner's lack of concern that his cheesy homemade drop boards leaked like a sieve whenever it rained. Since the first step was to stop the leak, I made new drop boards with 1/2 inch tinted polycarbonate and Starboard, using overlapping joints. I've attached some pictures which show the boards finished on my workbench, a closeup of one of the overlapping joints I made, and the new boards installed on my boat. You can spray a hose at the boards now, and nothing gets through.

And forgive me for saying this, but I don't think you can fault Hunter for their choice of materials when the problem seems to be an ignored leak. There are a lot of things inside the boat that will last a long long time as long as they're kept dry, but which will fall apart if you let them contantly get wet. Just saying.

Nice job on those drop in's! Maybe I could notch the existing Lexan pieces and replace the teak boards with new notched ones. I'm replacing the rotted spacers for the tool tray with teak just to be sure.

I went cheap with replacing what you call spacers, or I refer to as backer blocks, while doing my companionway and engine enclosure rebuild. I was cruising the lumber aisle at Lowe's, and found 42" long pressure treated pine deck railing stiles for 99 cents a piece. They were 2x2 (actually 1.5 x 1.5 inches) but a couple of quick passes through my table saw made them the required 7/8ths square. The pine is denser than the softwood Hunter originally used, and the fact that they're pressure treated means they'll probably be rot resistant.
