I am looking at a project O'Day 27, that is in fair condition. it needs alot of work, to say the least but I think with all the time on my hands I can save this boat. here is what I need help with. the chainplates leaked and the bulk head rotted pretty bad, it's missing the rudder, and has a steel pipe for the tiller (it has the part that the handle mounts too, and mounts to the rudder post, just missing the wooden handle, and rudder.) the standding rigging wire rope was cut with bolt cutters, and it very filthy. I read that this is a great boat for traveling on, and it is all I can afford after a family member destroyed my first boat, and left me holding the bag. I need as much help and advice as possiable, I have alot of time and can get most of the supplies that will be needed. I just never done this before. thanks, Bill

thanks, I think I can build a rudder, but need to get the proper pattern. I need to know about the standing rigging..wirerope size and what fittings did O'Day 27's came with. I can get the stainless wirerope but will have to search for the fittings. I need to find the length of the original rigging, so any help with that would be great. I'm scared to post a pic as it may not be suitable for those with weak stumaches let's say it's in need of a aloooot of work. but it is worth it for a good boat to travel the islands in. lol. thanks, Bill

Bulkheads and Standing Rigging
I can help a little with both of these: Standing Rigging - the local rigger (in North Texas, the local rigger is basically the ONLY rigger) asked for a chance to bid on my new standing rigging. I gave him the price Rudy was going to charge for a full set. He said he can't buy the parts for that price, and said I should buy from Rudy. For the O'Day 25, I think the full set was $450 (including fittings). Expect to pay more for your 27, but I think you'd be better off going that route. Then you know for sure you have the right stuff. On the bulkheads - I failed to properly inspect my boat (1976 O'Day 25), and after 3 years, a chainplate came free while sailing. The bulkhead rotted, (actually, both bulkheads, but only one chainplate pulled loose) and the chainplate hid the damage. I decided not to just try to repair it, but to pull them completely and replace it. Since I was going that far, and some hull liner work to do, I just gutted the boat and rebuilt it all. Well, rebuilding it all. Not finished yet, but about 70% so. I used 1/2" hyrdotek plywood (marine grade luan plywood). I think I paid about $65 a sheet in New Orleans, and bought 5 sheets, for all 4 bulkheads and to rebuild the cabnitry. I bought 1 3/4 of the same for the horizontal surfaces. I've used 3 of the 5 sheets for the 4 bulkheads (I reused the wood for the aft bulkhead, but covered it with formica), but part of that was from waste from a bad cut. I've read lots of reports of using teak plywood, or mahogany, but after 10 coats of varnish, my bulkheads look absolutely beautiful, and the luan cost about 1/2 the price of teak or mahogany. I used a chisel to break the old fiberglass tabbing that held the old bulkheads, and used them for patterns (and screwed up when I "estimated" for the rotted portion that was missing). I used an angle grinder to grind down the left over tabbing. The forward bulkheads were (the smaller set) were not tabbed on my boat (your 27 may be different), buty just screwed into place. I decided to glass them in as well.

While trying to find information about my O'day 26 Rudy suggested that I go to Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT (I live very close) and check the Oday plans that are in the Ship's Plan Library. I did find my O'day 26 drawings and included were drawings of the rudder and centerboard. Because I was close it did not cost me to do the research but I paid $13.00 per print for bluelines. The library will do research for you at a rate of $30.00 per hour. They may have what you require for your 27. Look them up on the net. sounds like it's expensive
so far the owners want $101 for the boat. it will cost me $550 to get it home. the rigging is missing, the rudder, and tiller are gone, the decks soft, the bulkheads are rotted to the point of crumbling when touched, the winches are frozen, the sails or in a wet bag laying in the sole and most likely will be bad. the teak trim is bad and lots of mold and mildew. all the cuhoins are bad also. I think that I might be better off to pass on this boat and hope for a better deal in the future. thanks for the advice and help. Bill

good luck , there is a great deal of satisfaction in all the work you have ahead of you. I have used this forum and the archives to research any and all of the projects we have undrtaken on our 1985 26 ftr. and found all the info to be very helpful. I too have had chainplate issues and my local boatyard was helpful in setting me on the right track, gave me some pro tips as well. rudy at d&r is a great guy very helpful and has it all.

I think it would be worth the effort
I figure I could use the knoledge about how the boat is constructed and what to do if something happens in a far away country. as for the supplies I have everything I need execpt the rudder info. a pattern would be very helpful (hint hint) be nice to get specs on it except resin and Epoxy. that stuff always seems to go bad before I use it. I don't think the hull or deck really leaks much, just around the chainplates. thanks, Bill

In my opinion, walk away from this deal
This is just my opinon - and free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it - but keep in mind that used boats are not in short supply. Frankly, supply exceeds demand and consequently you can usually find a solid used boat that is complete and ready to sail for a very reasonable amount of money. A boat missing it's rudder and it's rig has been exposed to considerable stress and there may be additional structural issues that haven't emerged yet. And, while the O'day 27 is a nice boat, it was mass produced and it's not what you'd call collectible. Of all the boats out there that could be yours, is this really the one you'd choose? Lastly, sailing boats is much more fun than working on them. How would you rather spend your time? I'd spend a little more up front and enjoy the sailing life right away.

...LIKE THE WIND! I am in no way against a project, but by the time you've gotten this tub in shape you could have bought a really nice O'day in sail away condition. Just ask yourself one question: Do I want to sail, or do I want to work? That shoud be a no-brainer. Cheers, Bob

unless you want to buy it for $600 and use it as a parts boat for another boat that is functioning 8). I got a project O'Day 25, and there are many times that I wished that I would have just spent the $9K to get one that was running. Of course, all my parts are new, but refitting a boat is absolutely horrible if you have to buy anything at retail prices.

thanks for the help. I was getting fairly desperate and I checked on a few things and I think it is a lost cause. I hate to say it but I decided on a Southcoast 22, that's needs new ropes and a good cleaning to be out there sailing. thanks for the great advice. Bill
