Scottie Sale

I have Bomar hatches on my H34 and have determined that the rubber gasket that seals the plexiglass hatch(transparent) to the actual hatch has rotted away. Therefore, a constant slow drip after every rain and/or washdown. I can't seem to find the right material to re-seal the hatches. Anyone have any ideas and/or things that they tried that worked?

Me Too!

Scottie, I have the same problem, and I have yet to contact Pompanette, Inc. (www.pompanette.com) who supplies such material. Have the model number and/or dimensions handy and give them a call. I have their catalog at home and spoke to a rep at the Newport boat show and he assured me that they have the parts that we need.

Do you mean

Hi Scotty Do you mean between the hatch and the frame, or between the frame and the hull? I think Bomar is in business, I would try them first. John

Fix a hatch

Yes Bomar are in business but the seals you need are nothing special, go to a rubber specialist shop and you will find the material in plenty for a fraction of the marine industry cost. Down here we have to improvise a lot as original spares are a long way off.

Pompette Does Stock Seal Material

In case you feel like going with the original seal Pompette (Bomar et al) does carry it. I believe they also have replacement "glass" but things like frames they may not have. It will depend on the age of your hatch. The factory and all the engineering drawings burned down several years ago so if the hatch is an 1980s vintage the metal extruded parts will probably not be available. Another area to check is the seal under the fixed frame and also the screws. I replaced my entire hatch and found a screw hole that was at the edge of the cutout (rough-in) and the sealant/bedding for the frame was deficient there so I was probably picking up some water there too. Water could get through a screw hole and into the deck - probably worse than leaking inside the boat. At least you can see the leak!

Glazing tape

I have used glazing tape to do the same job before. You can get it from a glass shop. It's simply a roll of putty like material. It will never dry out or stop sticking. It will clean off with WD-40.

Leaking Seal

You can find a replacement seal which is better than the original. go to any Hardware store and look for surgical rubber tubing about 3/8". It will fit perfectly into the seal slot. buy some plain rubber cement. Pull out the old seal. Clean the slot with 100 grit sand paper and lay in the rubber cement. Next, cut the tubing to the proper length using a diagonal cut at each end and cement this. The tubing is more flexable than the original neopreme and the hollow tubing allows a compression water tight seal. Good Luck
