leaking boat.....alot now..

So I think it is my stuffing box, which i know very little about.

I am now filling my bilge every day or two. Comming back from Rock Hall yesterday, i saw water on the floor and opened my floor boards to find the batteries submerged.

The boat doesnt have a combi anymore. It has the Fwd/Rev transmission.

The stuffing box looks like just a 5 inch length of rubber tubing with double hose clamps at both ends. On the forward end of the rubber tube is a larger diameter metal piece that has a grease fitting (zerk).

I had trouble greasing this for awhile and I was recently seeing more water appear in the bilge ( this is normally a VERY dry boat). So I investigated and turns out my grease gun was faulty and i successfully squirted a bunch of grease in there. The grease I used was the same stuff that is used on my max-prop. LubriPlate 130 or some such. It is very light brown in color and not extremely thick. Less thick than car axle grease.

I did that before this weekends trip, now the dripping is worse... alot.

Any ideas?

When I first owned 'Jenavive' I had exactly the same stern gland as you described. Each time I visited the boat I would pump a little more grease in. One morning in Swanage I awoke to find water over the cockpit sole. The batteries in the keel were completly flooded. A bit of vigorous pumping soon reduced the water level and revealed the problem, I had put so much grease in the gland that it had pushed the gland off the stern tube, I cleaned off as much grease as I could then refitted the stern gland and tightened up the jubilee clips holding the gland on the stern tube. As soon as I could I fitted an oil reservoir to drip feed oil into the fitting and removed the grease gun approach.

When I fitted a new engine I changed over to a Volvo Boot stern gland which just requires a tiny amount of grease once a year and have found it perfectly acceptable ever since.

There's a saying in medicine that I guess applies to boats as well:
"Anything that can cure you can kill you."

Hi GH,
Look in the files section for Volvo_Rubber_Stuffing_Boxes.pdf
I'm installing one on the Ballad, as they have a stellar reputation and are about as simple as it comes.
The file has available sizes and part numbers, they are relatively inexpensive.

Well. ...

If you pump too much grease into the grease nipple for the stern gland/ stuffing box you can pop the lip seal.....

I speak from experience.... :)

You'd be amazed at the power of a grease gun. My friend has a very large tracked excavator. The mechanism for tightening the tracks is powered by a grease gun. The amazing power of hydraulics!

ah hem...

I delayed writing this email, but i have to face the music.

Wasnt I crying that my boat was sinking like a year ago?
I think it was, i remember. .... at the highth of Ice and Beer season?

Well, my dripless shaft seal may still be leaking, but I know some of the water in the bilge is from the ice box that drains to that loocation.

See you next year, when i will have forgotten my lessons and will be crying again !
